Port your mobile number with your new provider

These instructions address all aspects and potential issues – regardless of the provider. You will be guided step by step through the process for switching providers. Topics that are frequently forgotten – such as aspects relating to WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, contact backups and bank authentication – are also addressed.

To ensure a smooth number-porting process, you should pay attention to a few key points. When switching providers, you need to take into account both contract durations and notice periods. If you don't, you will have to pay high fees.

  • Canceling your subscription and signing your new contract

You can switch your mobile service provider easily in two steps:

    • The best way to cancel your contract is by registered mail. A Sunrise subscription can only be canceled by phone or via chat , as we support our customers even when they switch to another provider.

Please note that when you cancel a contract, you need pay attention to the difference between the contract duration and the notice period.

The contract duration tells you how long you are required to stay with your current mobile service provider. Contracts generally run for 12 or 24 months. Some providers also offer subscriptions with no minimum contract duration.

The notice period stipulates either the earliest date on which you can give notice or the specific period of time that has to elapse prior to cancellation. A Sunrise Freedom subscription can be canceled at any time with a notice period of 60 days. You can find more details on contract durations and notice periods at Sunrise here.
    • Once you have canceled your contract with your old mobile service provider, you can sign a new contract with your new provider. Be sure to get in touch with your new provider promptly after giving notice to cancel your old subscription.

Important note: If you want to keep your phone number, be sure to make this clear when you sign your contract. The best way to do so is to put it in writing.

If you fail to state that you wish to keep your number, you may lose it and not be able to retrieve it.

Once you've made your intentions clear, your new provider will use an automated system to obtain your number from your old provider. You will receive a new SIM card from your new provider that you can activate on the date the contract goes into effect. Your new provider will inform you of this date.
  • Prepaid numbers can be ported very easily without any need for authentication. A change of ownership can also be carried out without any complications. Follow the same steps as described above. Sunrise customers who wish to switch providers and port their number can contact us via our cancellation page for assistance.

Please note that your prepaid balance will expire if you switch to a different provider. It therefore makes sense to use up your credit balance before making the switch.

  • To keep your number from your landline network, just follow the instructions described above. Simply cancel your contract with your old provider and sign a new contract with your new provider. Sunrise customers can contact us via our cancellation page for assistance here.

Internet connections and TV services are generally associated with a phone number, but that number isn't relevant for most customers.

  • You will have to pay an early cancellation fee if you switch to a new provider before your contract duration has ended. You should therefore contact your current provider in advance to obtain information on your contract duration and notice period.

You won't incur any costs if you follow the steps we've described. That’s why we recommend to our customers that they contact us if they're thinking of switching to another provider. You'll find a list of the fees Sunrise charges for early cancellation here. The following table contains an overview of the fees charged by Swiss mobile service providers for early cancellation*:

  • Customers often forget that their phone number is linked to different mobile services. Here are some examples:

    • Whatsapp
    • Instagram
    • Snapchat
    • Twitter
    • Facebook-Messenger
    • Bank account (for authentications via SMS TAN)
    • E-mail account (for two-factor authentication)

Many customers store their contacts on their SIM card. Be sure to export and save these contacts before you switch SIM cards; otherwise you will lose them. You'll find instructions for Android phones here and instructions for iCloud and iTunes here.

Please find out how to back up your contacts before switching providers. We will be happy to assist you on the phone or in a Sunrise shop near you. If you follow our instructions correctly, you'll be able to keep your number and therefore generally won't have any problems with social media, bank information, e-mail accounts, etc.

In the case of WhatsApp, we recommend that you back up your chat history before switching providers. You can create a chat backup easily via your WhatsApp settings.

  • Depending on which provider you use, you may be able to cancel options on the phone or via your online customer account. Some options can also be deactivated via SMS. Please contact your mobile service provider. Sunrise customers can delete options in their My Sunrise customer account. Our staff at our Sunrise shops will also be happy to help you. Alternatively, you can call 0800 707 505.

  • You shouldn't encounter any issues with porting if you follow the instructions provided here. Most delays that occur involve customers' names: For direct porting, you must provide a name that is exactly the same as the name stored by your old provider. Providers will reject any request in which the customer's name does not exactly match the name it has on record. Such problems will not occur, however, if you cancel your old subscription first and then port your number.

It may be technically impossible to port your number if you try to do so too early on in the switching process. Most customers do not know exactly when their contract expires. The best way to get this information is to contact your current provider.

If you fail to inform your new provider in good time of your intention to keep your number, you may end up losing the number in the worst case.

The first two points also apply to Internet and TV services. However, the problems that occur most frequently here involve incorrect wiring of the Internet box. Sunrise customers should contact our Technical Support team if they encounter any issues with this.

  • Swisscom, Salt, UPC and other providers all have cancellation form templates that can be found online. Sunrise has no such forms because Sunrise subscriptions can only be canceled by phone or via chat. If you would like to switch to Sunrise, our Sales department will be pleased to assist you.

  • In accordance with the Decree of the Federal Communications Commission concerning the Telecommunications Law (no english version available), every customer has the right to keep their phone number when they switch providers. Telecommunications service providers must ensure that numbers can be ported. The provider in question must also bear the costs associated with porting.
