Criminals use what is called ransomware to encrypt data on random Internet users’ computers and block their access. They then request ransoms from their victims to unblock the system. These extortion attempts often go in hand-in-hand with threats to delete information from infected systems or to distribute sensitive data like photos to the public or to personal email address lists.
