CHRIS DE BURGH - "50LO"
05.11.2025
Musical Theater Basel
Chris de Burgh celebrated a remarkable milestone in his career in 2024: half a century as a recording artist. To mark the occasion, he has released his album "50" and is going on tour again. Chris de Burgh will be playing in Basel in November 2025.
When he signed his first record deal in 1974 and released his debut album "Far beyond These Castle Walls" that same year, Chris de Burgh was not looking beyond the immediate future. "When I held a copy of that record in my hands, I didn't think it would go any further after that release," he recalls. "I was incredibly naive about the music business, but I was full of hope and dreams, and in spectacular fashion, my dreams not only came true, they became truer than true. I never thought back then that I would last this long. Fifty years? Wow!"
A song from the first album gave an early indication of what was to come for Chris; the single "Flying" was at number 1 in Brazil for 17 consecutive weeks. "I thought: 'Good, I'm in! A global star overnight!", Chris remembers. "But it wasn't that easy. From then on, it was hard work and a really tough time, but the experience I had at my parents' hotel, Bargy Castle, performing for the guests there, made me believe that I had something to give to people."
Over time, one market after another - Australia, South Africa, Ireland, Norway, Canada, the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Lebanon, to name but a few - took notice of his music, and with each new album release, a solid foundation was laid for a lasting and significant international career.
"What I was trying to achieve was to look at a globe and light lights in it," says Chris. "Some took longer to come on, some never came on, some went out later, which is natural. I've traveled a lot and worked a lot, because in the end there's only one me. I am the engine. I write all the songs, all the lyrics, do all the TV shows, all the radio shows, all the interviews."
Over the course of five decades, Chris has sold more than 45 million albums worldwide, performed nearly 4,000 concerts around the world and, perhaps even more remarkably, continued to make music his way for his loyal following. "Without the love and support of my audience, I would never have had such a long career," Chris admits.
To celebrate this relationship and his musical longevity, Chris has released a new album titled "50" in 2024 and has gone on tour with it. "I'm going to pick my favorite songs from each of my previous studio albums for the new album," he says, "It's going to be a great way to step into the world and say, 'This is what I've been doing.' It's just a taste of what I've done, of course, because I've written around 330 songs and counting."
"The tour will be about the time I started out, as a single guy with a guitar and a piano. So it will be about me performing and talking about the music, about the origins of the songs and their background."
