John Butler live in Zurich and Bern
John Butler is an icon. One of Australia's most prolific independent artists, Butler is also a political activist, an environmentalist and a master of stringed instruments, deep grooves and candid lyrical reflections.
Butler has never strayed far from his beginnings as a street musician in Fremantle and has remained true to his indie core. A statue in his home bears witness to his early successes, where he sold 3500 self-financed cassettes. His rich catalog of iconic hits, spanning a quarter of a century, includes signature songs like the radio earworms "Zebra" and "Better Than" as well as his explosive instrumental epic "Ocean".
His music continues to travel the globe, and Butler has performed on the world's most celebrated stages, from venues to festivals including Fuji Rock, Glastonbury, Coachella, Red Rocks Amphitheatre and beyond, with his energetic live performances and revered musicianship appealing to a wide audience.
In addition to Butler's success on several studio albums, it is his instrumental solo epic "Ocean" that has played a pivotal role in the troubadour's rise. This rousing ode, which has now become an integral part of every live show, showcases Butler's virtuosity with unparalleled intensity.
The new, upcoming album "PRISM" was recorded and produced with super producer James Ireland (POND, San Cisco) in Fremantle, Australia. Containing wild rock songs, soulful ballads and some profound reflections on relationships, global politics and personal issues, the album is a testament to the sheer talent of this storyteller and shredder extraordinaire.
"For me, PRISM is a cathartic release, a celebration of my solo career, a departure from the John Butler Trio and a further sonic expansion as I continue to refine my musical journey," explains Butler. "The title reflects the sonic and emotional range I wanted to explore: the full spectrum of being human. Love, death, politics, inner and outer turmoil and redemption."
