Soul high-flyer Jalen Ngonda with new album in Zurich
In the last three years, Jalen Ngonda has evolved from cult favorite to genuine soul torchbearer, taking his sound from intimate club stages to arenas and international festivals. Today, he returns with the announcement of his sophomore album "Doctrine Of Love," due out June 5 via Daptone Records, while also unveiling the infectious title track.
"Doctrine Of Love" is an instant classic full of confidence and self-assurance, combining everything that made his debut album "Come Around And Love Me" such a breakthrough (now over 348 million streams) and taking it a step further. While his debut album harked back to the early 1970s brilliance of Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, this new collection is more 1968-tinged and rich with mid-50s New Orleans R&B, girl-group melodrama and the rawness of Chicago and Detroit soul.
Ngonda, who was born and raised in Maryland outside of Washington D.C., began his journey at the age of 11 when he heard The Temptations on the radio and was "completely blown away." He taught himself guitar, drums and keyboards and gained his first experience as a drummer in church before studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. After performing as a street musician in London and honing his craft, he signed to Daptone Records - home to Thee Sacred Souls, The Womack Sisters and Lee Fields - in 2022 and released his acclaimed debut album the following year.
Since then, Ngonda's rise has been unstoppable. From 300-capacity clubs to large 5,000-plus capacity halls, from early festival appearances to impressive headline performances at Glastonbury, he has proven that authentic soul still has the power to move modern audiences. Collaborations with Gorillaz and Jordan Rakei, as well as appearances supporting Thee Sacred Souls, Freddie Gibbs and Olivia Dean, have further cemented his reputation as one of the most intriguing artists on the contemporary music scene.
Ngonda will take "Doctrine Of Love" on tour with an extensive run of headline dates and appearances at major festivals in Australia, the UK and Europe. The tour will culminate in a major headlining tour of the UK and Europe, supported by Brooke Combe. Tickets go on sale on Friday, March 13 at 11am.
