30 years of Placebo - the band returns with Placebo RE:CREATED. With their PLACEBO 30TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR, they will make a stop at Zurich's Hallenstadion on 04.11.2026. Songs from Placebo and Without You I'm Nothing will be played.
To mark the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album, legendary alternative rock band Placebo announce Placebo RE:CREATED, a powerful reissue of the album they first introduced to the world in 1996. The album will be released on June 19, 2026 via Elevator Lady Ltd on AWAL.
Originally released at the height of the Britpop era, Placebo stood in stark contrast to the prevailing cultural mood. While much of British guitar music at the time relied on youthful nostalgia and national identity, Placebo's debut delivered something far more provocative and confrontational. The songs addressed sexuality, androgyny, addiction and alienation with an honesty rarely heard in mainstream rock at the time, establishing the band as one of the most distinctive voices of their generation.
Thirty years later, the band return to that seminal album from a new perspective with Placebo RE:CREATED. Featuring reworked and enriched versions of all ten tracks from the original album, as well as two bonus tracks from the original release, the new album captures how these songs have evolved over decades of performances, while retaining the raw spirit that characterized them. The tracks include the epochal singles "Nancy Boy" and "36 Degrees" - songs that helped establish Placebo's reputation for fearless lyricism and genre-bending sound. These new recordings reinforce the urgency and attitude that made the originals resonate so strongly, while reflecting the band's growth and experience in the years since their debut.
Of the new album, Placebo explain:
"We consider this album a director's cut. We didn't create it from scratch. We went back to the original master tapes and put 30 years of live experience with these songs into the album.
This project was about finally finishing the album, bringing it into the 21st century sonically while maintaining the integrity and spirit of the original. It's not about improving it - there's nothing wrong with that - it's about completing it.
When we recorded the first album, we didn't have the experience or the studio know-how to fully realize what was in our heads. Over the years, the songs took on a life of their own on stage; they grew, they evolved, they sort of completed themselves.
It's a tribute to our beginnings and a meeting point between who we were then and who we are now. It's a way of honoring that innocence while allowing the songs to exist with the size, confidence and energy of the band we've become."
When Placebo first emerged in 1996, the band's aesthetic and lyrical perspective challenged expectations within British rock culture. Their visual identity - deliberately ambiguous, glamorous and provocative - challenged traditional notions of gender and masculinity at a time when such themes were barely entering mainstream discourse. In doing so, Placebo created space for a different kind of alternative voice that resonated deeply with an audience that felt outside of the cultural mainstream and to which many of their contemporaries still relate today.
Today, discussions around identity, gender expression and individuality are more visible - and often more contentious - than ever. Against this backdrop, the origins of Placebo's debut seem strikingly relevant again. Placebo RE:CREATED not only celebrates the legacy of the original album, but also emphasizes its enduring cultural significance and reaffirms how forward-thinking the record was upon its release.
The album has been remixed by Brian Molko and Rob Kirwan from the original master tapes and mixed by Adam Noble. The result is a collection that retains the immediacy and rebellious nature of the original while pushing the sound into new territories - reflecting both the band's long history with these songs and their ongoing creative evolution.
