  • Sunrise Internet Box and Fritzbox 7390/7490 – choose the best WLAN network

    General

    • You can choose from two WLAN networks: 5 GHz WLAN or 2.4 GHz WLAN.
    • The broader frequency band of the 5 GHz WLAN provides significantly better performance compared to the 2.4 GHz WLAN.

    Recommended use

    • Use the 5 GHz WLAN network for media streaming and transferring music, pictures, and videos.
    • Use the 2.4 GHz WLAN network for e-mails and light Internet surfing.
Attention: Please note that not all devices fully support 5 GHz WLAN. In this case, use the 2.4 GHz WLAN network.

    • 5 GHz

      • Very wide range (from WLAN channel 100)
      • At 1733 Mbit/s, faster than the 2.4 GHz WLAN network, thanks to WLAN standard 802.11ac WAVE II
      • 23 non-overlapping channels and therefore less susceptible to interference
      • MU-MIMO (Multi-User– Multiple Input Multiple Output)*
This function allows the Wi-Fi clients that it support to have access to a maximum number of antennas (and bandwidth).
      • Beamforming*
To reduce interference between Wi-Fi signals (which can occur, for example, when several Wi-Fi access points that are close to each other are transmitting radio signals), your Sunrise Internet Box automatically steers the signal toward your Wi-Fi client by detecting where the Wi-Fi client is located and then amplifying the signal from the built-in antennas accordingly.
      • DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection)*
To be able to use more channels for transmitting Wi-Fi signals (channels 52 to 64 and 100 to 140), your Sunrise Internet Box regularly checks frequencies that are also used for other applications, such as weather radar. These channels typically have less traffic and allow Wi-Fi clients that support this technology to benefit from higher throughput and better coverage. More information on the Bakom page.

      * These functions are only available on the 5 GHz (802.11ac) band and cannot be changed.

      2.4 GHz

      • Wide range
      • At 450 Mbit/s, slower than the 5 GHz WLAN network
      • Only three non-overlapping channels
      • More susceptible to interference because other systems use the same frequencies (drones, remote controls, Bluetooth, etc.)

Fritzbox – activate MAC address filter

    Take the following steps:

    1. In the user interface of your modem, click on “Wireless”
    2. In the “Wireless” menu, click on “Security”
    3. In the section “Restricting Wireless Access”, activate the option “Do not allow any new wireless devices”
    4. Click on “Apply” to save the settings.

Now, only the devices that are listed under “Restricting Wireless Access” can connect to the WLAN network of your modem.

Fritzbox – add new WLAN device

Deactivate the MAC address filter temporarily to allow the modem to automatically accept the MAC address of a WLAN device.

    1. In the user interface of your modem, click on “WLAN”.
    2. In the “Wireless” menu, click on “Security”
    3. In the section “Restricting Wireless Access”, activate the option “Allow all new wireless devices”
    4. Click on “Apply” to save the settings
    5. Connect the WLAN device to the wireless network of the modem
    6. Activate the option “Do not allow any new wireless devices”.
    7. Click on “Apply” to save the settings
  • Sunrise is committed to a secure Internet
Sunrise, together with other leading representatives of the Swiss business community, established the Swiss Internet Security Alliance (SISA). SISA offers security checks as well as up-to-date security information.

      • Viruses can be transmitted through infected e-mails or when downloading data from unreliable sources, and can delete or change data on infected computers.
      • Trojans (or worms) can be unnoticed on your computer and send confidential information to a hacker who thereby gains access to your computer. You can detect Trojans only with the help of anti-virus software.

      Recommended protection measures

      • Sunrise surf protect protects you against viruses while you are surfing and does not require the installation of software on your device.
      • You should also use an anti-virus program and a firewall, and ensure that both are activated and always up-to-date.
      • Always keep your operating system, browsers with plug-ins, and e-mail program up-to-date by installing service packs and security updates on a regular basis.
      • Do not open any e-mail attachments from unknown senders.
      • Back up your data regularly.
    • Spam is unwanted e-mails, usually sales offers from unknown senders.

      Recommended protection measures

      • Be careful whom you share your address with. Untrustworthy website operations collect e-mail addresses and sell them to others.
      • Do not react to unwanted messages, not even by unsubscribing. Only unsubscribe from services that you actually signed up for.
      • Do not list your e-mail address on your website, because search robots are roaming all over the Internet and collecting e-mail addresses.
      • Phishing means obtaining confidential information, such as banking information, credit card numbers, account data and passwords.
      • Gaining access to this information allows criminals to withdraw money from your account, make purchases or shop online.
      • The fraudsters will falsify websites and e-mails from well-known companies and ask you to give them or confirm information such as your user name and password. The similarity to the authentic website is surprisingly high.

      Recommended protection measures

      • Sunrise surf protect protects you against phishing while you are surfing and does not require the installation of software on your device.
      • Credible companies never ask for confidential information like passwords in an e-mail message. Ignore e-mails containing such requests
      • Check the Internet address (URL) before you enter any sensitive data – for example: http//www.sunrise.ch.
      • Never click on links in suspicious e-mail messages. It is better to enter the URL manually.
      • Always make sure you only provide confidential information on the Internet if the data is transmitted in an encrypted format (key symbol and https instead of http).
      • Check your credit card invoice and account statements, and contact your financial institution immediately if there are any inconsistencies.
      • Ransomware refers to a special type of viruses, which encrypt the files on your computer and connected drives.
      • This means that the user no longer has access to their data (photos, documents, etc.) and is asked to pay a ransom.
      • There is no guarantee that you will regain access to your data after paying the ransom.
      • Ransomware is transmitted through infected e-mails or when downloading data from untrustworthy sources.

      Recommended protection measures

      • Sunrise surf protect protects you against ransomware while you are surfing and does not require the installation of software on your device.
      • Always keep your operating system, browsers with plug-ins, and e-mail program up-to-date by installing service packs and security updates on a regular basis.
      • Do not open any e-mail attachments from unknown senders.
      • A botnet is a group of computers that are used for criminal purposes without the knowledge of their owners.
      • They are used to distribute spam, for DOS (denial of service) attacks (overloading servers with queries), and other criminal activities.
      • Botnets are often set up using Trojans and viruses.

      Recommended protection measures

      • Sunrise surf protect protects you against viruses and Trojans while you are surfing and does not require the installation of software on your device.
      • Always keep your operating system, browsers with plug-ins, and e-mail program up-to-date by installing service packs and security updates on a regular basis.
      • You should also use an anti-virus program and a firewall, and ensure that both are activated and always up-to-date.
      • Hackers attempt to obtain access to a computer network, computer or a secured component (for example, a chip card), or blocked data by circumventing security precautions.
      • This is done by exploiting general flaws in software security, phishing, viruses, or Trojans – but also by guessing passwords.
      • Hackers often have criminal intentions, which may include data theft or building botnets.

      Recommended security measures

      • Sunrise surf protect protects you against phishing viruses and Trojans while you are surfing and does not require the installation of software on your device.
      • Always keep your operating system, browsers with plug-ins, and e-mail program up-to-date by installing service packs and security updates on a regular basis.
      • You should also use an anti-virus program and a firewall, and ensure that both are activated and always up-to-date.
