At the very beginning, a mentally distraught Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) admits he believed in Gellert Grindelwald’s (Mads Mikkelsen) plans for world improvement when he was young, not least because he was in love with him. This long overdue coming-out makes the «Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore» an emotional sequel that will have you filled with compassion for Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his suitcase full of beasts many times over.
Matrix 4: Resurrections
Finally, the 1999 movie «The Matrix» has released a third sequel that focuses less on the struggle between man and machine, and more on the romantic relationship between Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). Trinity has become a conservative housewife and could just be waiting to be hoisted back into the «Matrix» world by the «stranger» Neo: Almost too good to be true – and polished off with some fine irony.
Downton Abbey – A New Era
In the absence of royals, Hollywood director Jack Barber (Hugh Dancy), who plans to shoot a film with his silent film star Myrna Dalgleish (Laura Haddock), comes to «Downton Abbey» for this sequel. The setting not only allows the screenwriters to enjoy some dark humor, but also sets the scene for a tragic comedy to play out as movies begin to have sound. Extremely entertaining.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
And we’re continuing at high speed: Only 24 hours have passed since Sonic defeated the evil Dr. Robotnik (glorious: Jim Carrey) by sending him through a ring portal, when the bully returns with Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba) as reinforcement. Sonic, for his part, teams up with Tails the fox (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) so that nothing stands in the way of this showdown. Fans of the first Gaga show will enjoy this movie, too.
Last but not least, it’s thanks to the attention to detail of director Robert Eggers («The Witch») that this one is different from other Netflix shows like «Vikings» and the like: The rough, raw and blood-soaked style is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea and divides audiences, but the cinematic language alone will attract many viewers. So: watch this one on the largest possible screen and not on your mobile phone if possible.
The most recent directing work by the maker of «The Florida Project», Sean Baker also focuses on the white underbelly here: Seeing how former porn star Mikey (Trash Movie icon Simon Rex) desperately tries to find a job in his very rural Texas village, but keeps failing because of his past, is sure to go straight to the heart. Baker doesn’t depict his character as a victim, but rather as a hero with a great, often tragic desire to survive. Amazing!
The Italian drama «Three Floors» by Arthouse director Nanni Moretti tells the story of three families living in the same house in Rome, whose lives are linked by an accident. Their existence is driven by guilt, love and bad decisions, and adds up to a gripping, somewhat overloaded melodrama that spans several years.
That’s all for now: There’s so much to discover!
