Frequently asked questions
5G Standalone (5G SA) is an evolution of the current 5G, where a dedicated 5G core network takes over the management of data and voice connections.
It offers:
Higher speeds
Lower latency
Improved network coverage
Enhanced security
More efficient usage
Better indoor coverage
Improved 5G reception: 5G SA uses the same frequencies as the current 5G. Since no 4G connection is required anymore, these frequencies can be used more efficiently, improving 5G coverage, especially indoors.
More stable voice connections: Calls are made directly over the 5G network (VoNR), resulting in more stable connections and ensuring that 5G data connections are not blocked during calls.
Longer battery life: 5G SA reduces power consumption by eliminating the need for simultaneous 4G and 5G connections. Batteries last approximately 10-20% longer.
Enhanced security: 5G SA offers the most secure mobile connections thanks to dedicated device identity management.
New possibilities for:
Smoother streaming, even at large events.
Real-time video sharing at events.
Lag-free online gaming.
Enhanced augmented and virtual reality experiences without stuttering.
Dedicated solutions for:
Ultra-high reliability and low latency for industrial applications and mission-critical processes.
Connectivity for drones and autonomous driving.
Support for a larger number of devices in the Internet of Things (IoT).
Overall reduced energy consumption (sustainability).
Reduced energy consumption with 5G SA: 5G Standalone (5G SA) uses less energy per transmitted data unit compared to previous 5G networks based on 4G.
Supports environmental goals through reduced energy consumption.
Access to 5G Standalone depends on device manufacturers' certification and the release of firmware updates. It will become available over the course of the year.

To be able to use 5G SA, you need:
A 5G SA-capable subscription
A 5G SA-capable mobile phone
Only for Apple devices: a SUCI-capable SIM
5G SA-capable Subscriptions
The latest subscriptions Swiss Travel+, Swiss Connect Neighbors, Swiss Connect Europe+, and Swiss Connect Global already support 5G SA.
Among the older subscriptions, Sunrise Up XS, Sunrise Up S, Sunrise Up Swiss 10 and Sunrise Up M, Up L and Up XL already support 5G SA. Further subscriptions will continuously be made 5G SA-compatible.
If your subscription is not yet among them, you can switch to one of the new subscriptions mentioned above or check this page regularly for the latest information.
5G SA-capable Mobile Phones
In the section below you will find the current list of 5G SA-capable mobile phones.
5G SA-capable (e)SIM
Only for Apple devices (iPhone 14 and newer) is an eSIM/SIM card that supports SUCI required.
Current Network Operator Settings and "SUCI"
For Apple devices, the latest iOS version and the current "Network Operator Settings" must be installed. Apple rolled these out at the beginning of June. If "Sunrise 64.1" appears under "General => About => Network Provider," this is the case – otherwise, you must wait for the next iOS update.
Additionally, for Apple devices, there is another requirement for the eSIM/SIM card: "SUCI," an additional identity protection.
If the 5G Standalone option remains grey in the settings under Mobile Data => Data Options => Voice & Data, this could be due to two things:
Your subscription may not support 5G SA and/or the SIM card needs to be replaced because it does not support SUCI.
How to proceed: First, be sure to check your subscription. If it does not (yet) support 5G SA, switch to one of the latest subscriptions or wait until your subscription also supports 5G SA.If the 5G Standalone option is still grey afterward, your SIM most likely does not support SUCI.
How to proceed: Order a free eSIM in MySunrise. The older your SIM is, the more likely it needs to be replaced.
The devices listed below are currently certified for 5G SA. Additional brands and models will be added over time.
