International Women’s Day: Equity at Sunrise

International Women’s Day 2023 was very much dedicated to equity. To draw attention to this important topic, Sunrise sponsored the «Advancine» artwork which was on display at Zurich Central Station. In addition, there was an internal panel discussion with employees.

Equity ensures that everyone gets the same opportunities. It recognizes that advantages and barriers exist and that we don’t all start from the same place. The focus on gender equity needs to be embedded in the DNA of every society. This is why it forms part of the Sunrise Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) initiative «YouBelong!».

A workplace with employees who see the world from different perspectives creates a culture of creativity, innovation and problem-solving that benefits customers, employees and the company. Developing a culture that supports all employees is not only right from a moral point of view. It also drives company performance and growth.

The difference between equality (on the left side) and equity (on the right side)

A very important measure that Sunrise is extremely proud of is being a signatory of the Advance Diversity Charter. This charter is a commitment to gender equality in business and thus to a workplace environment that promotes a fair and balanced approach to hiring, remunerating, promoting and retaining talented young female employees. Advance is the leading business association for gender equality in Switzerland and is a network of more than 120 Swiss-based companies committed to increasing the proportion of women in management roles.

Focus on equity

Equity isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have. Equity ensures that everyone gets the same opportunities. This is based on recognizing that advantages and barriers exist and that we don’t all start from the same place.

Equality vs. equity, what’s the difference?

Equality:

Equality is the state of being equal in status, rights and opportunities. This refers to making sure individuals or groups of people are given the same resources or rights to opportunities. Equality means that all employees are given equal benefits, standards, training, and opportunities in the business. Although this may appear to be a smart inclusion strategy at first glance, decision-makers must recognize that not all employees start from the same situation.

Equity:

Equity is defined as the quality of being fair or impartial and just. This is not only about the support and resources given to an individual but the outcomes achieved as well. Equity forms the basis for creating equal conditions. Equality, on the other hand, levels the playing field by highlighting inequalities. This ensures that everyone gets what they need to be successful.

Equal?! Switzerland on the path to equality

Our partner Advance is staging a big art exhibition at Zurich Central Station to celebrate its 10th anniversary. It aims to make the public aware of the benefits of equality and inclusion, stimulate discussion and provide information in the form of facts and figures. Sunrise is the proud sponsor of the «Advancine» statue. Our CEO André Krause attended the opening and took to the stage to explain why Sunrise was participating in this project:

The «Advancine» named «Progress and Regression=Nature» has a very special connection to nature because she has a coat made from natural products and is accompanied by two guests that are also made from natural products.

«Equity, equality and equal opportunities for everyone are very important topics that form part of the Sunrise DNA. The Advance art exhibition is a very original idea that provides a great platform for discussions and an exchange of ideas and encourages people to think.»

André Krause explains: «The discussion around getting back to nature, back to our origins is a very good basis for reflecting on where we come from. When we think back to our childhood, we’re all unbiased, we have no bad recollections, no prejudices of any kind. This idea of getting back to nature is a very exciting point to start discussions.»

This exhibition forces everyone to confront the issue of equity and to reflect on it. Because each and every one of us has a contribution to make in creating a more equitable world.

International Women’s Day at Sunrise

International Women’s Day was also celebrated in the Sunrise offices. Sunrise employees all received a flyer containing exciting information. It folded into an origami flower and many people wore it to show their solidarity.

The panel discussion was made up of internal employees. Together they had a lively discussion about fairness, equality and equity.

In the afternoon, there was a lively panel discussion. The internal participants had a vigorous debate about fairness, equality and equity. They shared their personal experiences and stressed that equity is an issue that affects all of us, whether it’s raising children or taking up a new job. All of us need support from other people to achieve our goals. Some need a little more support and others a little less, very much reflecting equity.
